How much gas should our bolier use to power our central heating/ hot water?

girlwithacurl asked:

We recently moved from a 2 bed property to a 3 bed but since then have noticed a dramatic increase in the amount of gas we’re using. I read the meters regularly and we’re using nearly 4 times the amount of gas in the new property. Our boiler at the old house was approx 9 years old and we used the heating more than we are doing in this one. The boiler in the new house is not even 2 years old yet but after reading the meter whilst the heating was on it appears it’s using 3 cubic meters of gas per hour to heat our home. This is surely too much? Please advise!
House is much better insulated than the last. New double glazing and generally much warmer even when heating is not on. Old place was rather drafty! After speaking with a few people I think it maybe the gas meter that’s reading incorrectly but was just hoping there may be some gas engineers out there who knew approximately how many cubic meters or kwhs an average boiler uses.

central heating problem-radiators upstairs hot, downstairs just warm(ish). all balanced, pump running. help?

sharon asked:

have bled raditiators & released air from boiler using the automatic valve. I noticed that the return pipe from downstairs stays cold, whereas downstairs feed pipe gets hot. I total of 5 raditors downstairs + 5 upstairs. Boiler is upstairs. I’m sure pump is running - can feel it vibrating when I put my hand against it. OH lifted floorboards and we see that feed and return pipes into ‘T’s to feed upstairs and downstairs - feed out is 33mm, feed upstairs is 33mm but feed going downstairs is 25mm. We’ve only just moved into the property - thinking that the symptoms are a sign of pump problems - but though I’d try Yahoo! Answers before buying a new pump. Also, if I do buy a new pump … ours have the speed control on the right side, but most of the ones I see on the web are on the left side - but a left sided one wont allow us to close the boiler cover … can the a left-sided pump be installed upside down (turned 180 degrees) to put controls the controls on the right? Any help appreciated

about my central heating?

WOOFIE asked:

i have been worrking away for 7 months. when i came home, my boiler pressure was less than 1/2 a bar. so i increased it to the “red ” needle, “one bar”. When i fired up the system, every thing seems fine, the house is very toasty, but the pressure bar has gone to 3 bar? When i saw this i switched the system off. there have been no adverse affects, to the system, but i dont want to chance a cats-after-me. my boiler is a worsester 9.25 and i changed the diveter valve last news eve.( which was fun over the silly season last year!) We have been here 7 yrs, the boiler is a couple of yrs older. what should we do. we are not insured for boiler breakdown, as yet.
we are now using portable gas heaters to keep the house warm, but with small kids ,its very difficult! We just cant afford to throw are money on a useless heater.

Central heating help please?

cigaro19 asked:

I have been living in my house for 3 years and still dont know how to work my heating system!
I have a back boiler system and I have thermostatic controls on my radiator. I jsut want to know how this system works and how I could use it best to save money.
If I have the water and heat on then the heat is controlled by thermostat but if i have just heat on then the thermostat doesnt work so it goes by the radiator valves.
Is it cheaper to have just heat on or heat and water?
